Turkana West constituency has received the lion's share of the Sh5 billion Uwezo Fund released by the government for year 2013/2014.
The constituency has been allocated Sh29.4 million while Embakasi West will get the least-Sh14.5 million- under the funding programme that gives loans to youth and women owned businesses.
A statement from the Ministry of Devolution and Planning said the government has released a total of Sh5.35 billion out of the total Sh6 billion that was approved by parliament as Uwezo Fund for the current financial year.
Out of the total kitty, 11 per cent will be retained for administration and capacity building in accordance with the Public Finance Management (Uwezo Fund) Regulation 2014.
“A total of Sh180 million will be retained for administration and Sh465.6 million for capacity building,” the Planning Ministry said.
Each constituency gets an initial equal allocation of Sh13.84 million and additional funds are given according to the poverty index of a region.
According to Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, Embakasi West constituency has 16,283 as the estimated number of poor people while Turkana West has 197,277 poor people.
Other factors used to determine allocation are constituency popularisation, constituency poverty headcount, and contribution to national poverty.
Uwezo Fund was launched last year to give loans to businesses owned by women and youths to spur creation of jobs. It offers these businesses grants and interest-free loans and mentorship.
It offers businesses an opportunity to strengthen and grow in order to exploit the 30 per cent government tenders allocation for women and youths.
