International Women's Day celebrations kick off in Kisumu County
Celebrations to mark this year’s International Women’s Day kicked off in earnest in Kisumu County on Sunday, 1st March 2015 amid calls for more to be done to realize women empowerment in Kenya.
In Nairobi, First Lady Mrs Margaret Kenyatta officially opened the International Women’s Day (IWD) expo at KICC on Saturday 28th February 2015 that is co-hosted by the Ministry of Devolution and Planning and the Beyond Zero Campaign as part of the countdown to next Sunday’s IWD event.
The First Lady got an opportunity to see what the various agencies under the Ministry do as she toured the exhibition area. Among the stands that she visited include the Huduma Kenya, Uwezo Fund, NYS, Women Enterprise Fund, and CDTF.
The Expo opened its doors to the public on Friday, February 27, 2015 and will run till the 6th of March. It opens at 9.00am till 6.00pm.
A major highlight of this year’s International Women’s Day will be the First Lady’s Half Marathon that will start at Nyayo National Stadium and climax with the official commemoration of IWD at the same venue.
The IWD event in Kisumu County was held at Urudi Primary School in Nyakach constituency and attended by Planning Principal Secretary Eng Peter Mangiti, Kisumu County Women Rep Rose Nyamunga, Nyakach MP Aduma Owour, UN Women Resident Representative Zebib Kavuma and Kisumu County Commissioner Erastus Ekidor among others.
