Uwezo Fund Participates at the Kitale National Show 2024

Uwezo Fund is participating in the Kitale National Show 2024 at the ASK grounds, Hospital Ward, in Kiminini Constituency.

This year, the Fund is showcasing success stories from the region, highlighting its commitment to innovation and sustainable development. Among the featured projects are the Big Six Self Help Group, which has ventured into tissue culture farming, and Ujirani Mwema na Amani CBO, both remarkable examples of community-driven progress.

Ujirani Mwema na Amani CBO
Established in 1992 and located in Matisi, Trans Nzoia County, Ujirani Mwema na Amani is a community-based organization (CBO) that serves as an umbrella body for five constituent groups. The CBO currently has 73 members, with 26 males and 47 females, most of whom are youthful women, including many single mothers.

The CBO supports its member groups through exhibitions, training, and experience-sharing opportunities. This enables the groups to learn from best practices and improve their livelihoods. The groups engage in various activities, such as: weaving textiles, waste paper recycling, bead making, weaving mats and rugs from sheep wool, manufacturing soaps and detergents, producing hand and body lotions, table mat production, rearing cocoons for silk production, cotton yarn recycling and making Kikoi shawls.

In 2021, the Weavers Women Group, one of the affiliated groups, received Ksh 80,000 from Uwezo Fund. The funds were invested in purchasing raw materials for soap and detergent production, ensuring the sustainability of their individual enterprises.

Ms. Alice Tulienje, chair of the group said in an investment of Ksh. 1,000 for a 20 litre Jerrican of undiluted liquid soap produces 40 liters of diluted liquid soap when mixed in the ratio of 1:1. This retails at Ksh. 100 per liter thus 4000 for the 40 liters. A profit margin of Ksh. 3,000 is thus realized.

"This has enabled the group to grow over time and meet their financial needs" she said.

Big Six Self Help Group
This group has made significant strides in farming, specifically in tissue culture farming, contributing to agricultural innovation in the region.

Join us at the Kitale National Show as we explore the future of agriculture and trade together!
